Author Publications about Mariupol Greeks in the Nadazov Region

This section includes nearly 1,000 publications (monographs, academic and journalistic articles, conference reports, abstracts, field observations, and more) organized alphabetically. These works, published over the past 250 years in both print and digital formats, cover events from the Russo-Turkish War and the migration from Crimea to the Nadazov region (1770s–1780s) up to the contemporary Russo-Ukrainian conflict (2014–2020s). They focus on the history and culture of the Mariupol Greeks in the Nadazov region, biographies and works of notable individuals, places of settlement, historical studies, and prominent researchers of this community. Some publications are retrospective, and we encourage consulting other bibliographic sections on our website, as this list does not cover compilations, reference materials, or documents specifically on the Nadazov period of Greek history and culture. Note that all publications released after 2013 in Russia and the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by it are in a separate section.

In organizing these publications, the Ukrainian alphabet served as the primary guide. Since more than half of these works are in Russian (particularly those published before 1991), Russian alphabetization is also used parallel to the Ukrainian one, with Russian letters indicated after a slash. When searching by author, please account for possible differences in name spellings between Ukrainian and Russian (e.g., Biletsky/Belyetsky, Mykola/Nikolai).

Publications are grouped by author’s last names, so the works of any one author can be found together, regardless of language. For easier searching, all foreign-language publications (English, Greek, German, Turkish, French, etc.) appear in a separate group at the end of the alphabetical list. Publications by authors who have changed their last names are also grouped under one letter (e.g., B includes Batsak+Kozina), as well as publications under pseudonyms (e.g., Khorosh+Luis).

These works were authored by both scholars and enthusiasts, with some publications being compilations. They span different historical periods, each reflecting distinct ideological perspectives – Russian (imperial, “Russkiy Mir”), Soviet (communist), Ukrainian, or Greek-centered. Some publications are by researchers, local historians, and politicians suspected or already accused of collaborationist activities. However, their works contain valuable factual material about the Greek community and may be useful for political, sociocultural, and historiographical research. We urge researchers to approach these sources objectively, uphold academic ethics, and critically assess conclusions, evaluations, and comments within these works. The decision on whether to reference certain publications is left to your discretion.

The authors of this section do not claim to have included every publication about the Mariupol Greeks or works by members of the community, but we are confident that we have covered significant works and notable authors. Notably under-researched are publications in local periodicals, such as the Greek-language Kolektivistis, published in 1930–1937, other  publications from the1930s, as well as periodicals from the Donetsk region during the Soviet era and after Ukraine’s independence. We also hope that current researchers will send us their publication lists so that we can further expand and refine the bibliography we have compiled.
