Fines

For the study of the everyday life of the Greek population, valuable is the case “Case on the collection of communal and quitrent duties from the inhabitants of the town of Mariupol and the villages under the jurisdiction of the Mariupol Greek Court. 1796–1797.” It represents a register of records of fines for non-observance of religious rites. It contains a table with the names and surnames of violators, indicating gender, age, the amount of fine to be collected, and how many times the Greeks had failed to attend confession and communion. For the first violation, a fine of 5 kopecks was imposed; for the second – 15 kopecks. It should be emphasized that in 1795, from the town of Mariupol and the Greek villages, 666 men and only 10 women failed to attend confession and communion. In addition to this information, the case also contains reports of village overseers, extracts from the journals of the sessions of the Greek court, and other materials.
