Conflicts

Numerous official documents from the Mariupol Greek Court reveal conflicts within the Greek community, allowing for the exploration of the reasons for dissatisfaction with the actions of appointed officials (government officers) and the methods of resistance against them. These documents also help provide insights into everyday forms of protest, etc. The Mariupol Greek Court appointed an official, called a government clerk, later referred to as the “overseer” (“smotritel”), who also performed the duties of a scribe. Documents show that not all overseers carried out their duties conscientiously or satisfied local residents. For example, the overseer of the village of Sartana, F. Paseva, was dismissed for alcoholism. 

The document of case 6271-D indicates that in 1846, the residents of the village of Ignatievka, unable to tolerate the alcoholism of their overseer, I. Kaltsatin, wrote a report to the Greek court demanding his dismissal.
